The annual dominance that we so often see in the French league from perennial winners Paris Saint Germain was brought to a an astounding halt last season.
Lille clinched the Ligue 1 title for the first time in 10 years and their success has brought a new wave of fan optimism for the upcoming campaign.
So, with that said, let’s take a look at the dead ball specialists from France’s highest tier of league football.

Set piece takers from Ligue 1’s newly promoted teams
Ligue 1 follows the German Bundesliga principle of having two teams go up and another two relegated to the division beneath.
Because I haven’t watched or seen any of the following promoted clubs in action, I’ll update their free kick and corner takers as the season gets underway.
Quite interestingly, Troyes had 13 chances to score from the penalty spot in the 2020-21 Ligue 2 competition.
Out of all those, 5 were dispatched by the defensive midfielder Florian Tardieu, whilst Yoann Touzghar put away 3 out of 5.
For the time being, I’d expect Touzghar to step up and be the primary taker simply due to him being a centre forward and the fact that he successfully converted their most recent penalty opportunity.
This team had a less eventful season in the penalty department with only 4 kicks from the spot in Ligue 2.
Mohamed Bayo scored 2 out of 4 and I’d expect him to continue with the responsibility here in the upcoming campaign.
Which team scored the most set piece goals in the 2020-21 Ligue 1 season?
Having cross-checked the top five leagues in Europe, AS Monaco recorded the highest figure for set piece goals with a staggering 19 conversions.
That actually equates to a set piece goal in half the Ligue 1 games!
Monaco were followed by Montpellier with 16 goals, and then Lyon and Marseille who had even lower figures of 12 and 11 goals each.
Hopefully this short article has provided a great amount of insight with regard to set piece takers in the French league.
